Scouting Sioux Falls

There is nothing that I love more than going out and scouting for ideas.  Sometimes it is fun to head to places that are not in my usual rotation.  These places are the ones that I usually only come home with things in my mind and not things in my hand…you know those kind of stores?

So this past weekend I was on such an adventure and wanted to share a few of the cool things that I found.  Please note that the following photos were taken from my phone so clarity may not be at it’s best!

I was totally blown away by some of the most amazing light fixtures that I have ever seen…please note that not a single one of these will fit in my current home…just doing a little bit of dreaming!!

Check out that amazing tufted headboard in the background!!

The picture does not do justice to the beautiful turquois color…it was truly amazing!

Can you believe this?  Incredible, huh?  Where does one hang something like this?

Now this set of twins I would definitely hang in my house if not for the several thousand dollar price tag…but they do get me thinking about how I could recreate these!!

I am absolutely in love with this bench!  A bench just does something to make a table more inviting!!

Check out this incredible table…I love the industrial/rustic look!

I think that this might look perfect on my dining room table with a few branches sticking out.

I had to take a picture of these just because I love barn doors and I love drift wood…the perfect combination!

Let me know if you need me to get you prices or store information on any of the items that I showed you!  Here’s to your happy hunting!!

Darn Doors!

Yikes!  I have been working so hard on getting my trim white and now have been working on the doors…not going well!
The problem is that the doors on the second floor are just a plain oak door, no fancy stuff.  When they are painted white they almost look like they are plastic and they do look very cheap!!
Check em’ out!
Here is the before.

And now the after…

And then here is the close up shot.

Kind of looks like plastic, huh?
Have you ever done something pretty drastic in your house and when you were done got sick to your stomach??
Ok, this may be one of those moments…but I have a plan to make it all better!!
At this moment my car is filled with moldings and a big bucket of black paint…yes, I said black.  I figured why not try it.  Here are my inspiration photos.  Let me know what you think.

I cannot imagine anything more dramatic than the black door.  Very unexpected!!
The only thing I can do is try and if it doesn’t work out I’ll go on to plan C.
Wish me luck and like always I would love, love, love your input!!

Master Bedroom Makeover

I have come to a point in my master bedroom where I just need to be done for awhile.  You know how it is, there is always going to be changes…that is just how the ball bounces!!  But, really I am so excited to move on to my next project that I am ready to reveal the master bedroom!

I regret that I do not have any pics of the before…I just went through 15 cd’s of pictures and there was not one single picture of my bedroom.  I guess I don’t take pictures in the bedroom…maybe this is a good thing!
I do however have a few pics to give you a good example of what it was like.  I used to have a strong affinity for very dark colors…imagine a dark brown/red room with dark wood accents.

This is very similar to the color that I had and this shelf setup was at the end of my bed…yikes!  Do you ever ask yourself “what were you thinking?”

I had moved my original bedside tables into the living room and was using these bar stools as side tables…no kidding!

This was the original comforter.  I did like what it looked like and how it felt.  I did not like that is always looked wrinkled.  I am not one to iron my bedding.
So now to the reveal!

My dog is a photo hound!  This is her spot and she refused to not be in the picture!
Initially, I had really wanted white bedding.  I bought and took back three different quilts/comforters/duvet covers.  I chose this one because it was so easy!  My dog and kids are always on the bed.  This quilt can easily be thrown in the washer and then thrown right back on the bed.  There is no ironing, no trying to get the comforter back into the duvet cover, no fluffing involved!

I searched forever for a dresser that I could redo.  I did not one with fancy lines and a lot of character, just wanted plain and simple.  Never found it.  But I did find this simple white dresser for a steal…love it!

I ended up going with the open style side tables that I found at Pier 1.  What I liked is that they have a little shine to them and a place that I could put a basket on the bottom.  I love magazines, my husband loves them even more, and this is a great place to store them.

The lamp shades are from Lowe’s…on clearance for $0.65!  They had a holiday ribbon around the edges which I replaced.

No room in my home is complete without pictures of my babies!

Linen pillows were hand made and I hope make the chairs fit better into the room design.  I had thought about reupholstering the chairs…got a little lazy!  The side table was made from a little side table that I had for years and then I topped it with a slice of tree stump.  (Thanks dad!)

My kids are at that age now where sometimes I need to get away from them and their friends (imagine 3 teenage girls squealing around your house) so I love having a seating area in the bedroom to escape!

Any stylish girl needs a full length mirror in her room…right??
I like my rooms to feel cozy, comfortable, and have elements that make it personal to me.  I am definitely on my way to moving toward lighter colors…will never let go of my black accents though!
Would love to know what you think!  All comments are so appreciated!  And if you like what you see here I would love to have you as a follower!
Cannot wait to get moving with my next project!

Watching Paint Dry

You may have seen that I have been trying to get all of my trim work painted.

Unfortunately, my personality does not like to accept the fact that paint needs time to dry.  I have tried to be more patient and frankly it never works!  It has caused my to have some issues with my projects in the past.  But, this time I had a plan…yeah!

Why not have several projects going at one time…smart, huh?  That way I can work on other things while my paint dries…I am so brilliant!

I needed pillows to go on the two chairs that I have in my bedroom.  I contemplated recovering the chairs and decided that maybe just having new pillows would work.  You can let me know what you think.

First, I started with a roll of muslin that I found for $3.99/yd.(but of course had a coupon for 50% off)!  I measured the back of the chairs to determine what size the pillows needed to be and cut it out with my handy dandy rotary cutter.

Then I quickly sewed up the sides.  My room is such a disaster right now and I certainly didn’t feel like hauling my machine downstairs so I had to sit “criss -cross applesauce” on my floor to get it done!

Then I stuffed the pillows.  Pillow inserts would have looked way better but you have to use what you have on hand I guess.

I have worked out a few of the lumps since this photo was taken.

Then I hand sewed little crocheted flowers onto the pillow.  Found the the flowers at the Hobby Lobby for $2.99 plus 50% off.  Probably cheaper than I could have made them for…if I knew how to crochet!

Aren’t they cute!

Would love to know what you think of them!

I have been saying it for a few weeks now, but this may be the week that I finally get my master bedroom d-o-n-e!!  And if I do,  you will be able to see these lovelies in their complete element!  No promises though!

Have a great day!

White All the Way!

Happy Monday!  Hope everyone had a great weekend!

I had a great weekend!  Saturday was great weather and my husband and I were able to go out for lunch and on a little scouting mission.  Found some really cool stuff that I will share later this week.

Sunday…ah, Sunday!  My favorite day of the week!  Finally was able to make some headway on my bedroom makeover.

I decided a few weeks ago that I was going to paint all of the trim work in my room white. I removed all of the base moldings, taped off the door and and window moldings and was able to get all of the window and door moldings painted!!

molding-pillow 007

This was truly the hardest part…why are there 14- 2inch nails holding on a 4 ft. piece of trim??

molding-pillow 015

Is this the ugliest wood you have ever seen?  Yeah, me too!

molding-pillow 018

Here’s my puppy, Chloe, helping out!!

molding-pillow 055

Look at the difference!  I am totally loving the white!  So worth the 4 coats of paint that I had to put on…yes, I said 4 coats!

molding-pillow 057

Sorry, not the best pic of the window…got very ambitious and already hung up the blinds…going to go with different curtains…but needed to get these off the floor and out of my way!!

So now today I am working on doing the base moldings.  Usually I would take things to our shop to paint them but:  1. no school so the kids are home  2.  we are in a winter weather advisory  and of course 3.  I wrecked my car last week and don’t have a way to haul them. Sad smile

So I compromised…

molding-pillow 060

Kind of liking the set up!

I am hoping that no dining room table means that I don’t have to cook tonight!!

molding-pillow 061

Boy, this looks like I have a long way to go!  Planning on doing the whole house eventually…

Let me know what you think…I love all comments…really!!  And if you like what you see would love to have you as a follower.  Leave me a comment and let me know!
