Taylor Swift Shadow Box

My sweet daughter Emily turns 13 tomorrow.  This girl has been a delight since the day she was born.  She is smart, she is pretty, she is kind, she is everything that a mom could ask for.

However, this is a trying time in a mother’s life.  I really don’t feel like I am old enough to have a teenager.  Has anyone else been here?  I look back and I can remember turning thirteen and when I was I thought that my parents were super old….yikes!

I wanted to make something special for Emily’s birthday.  She loves the color purple and she loves Taylor Swift so I thought why not combine the two to make a special birthday gift.

Here is what I came up with.  Yep, that’s me in the glare!

I LOVE this quote (from Taylor’s “Ours”).  What could be more perfect for a 13 year old girl.  I hope that as the years go on and as Emily faces the challenges of life and the criticism of others that she will always remember this.

The quote is printed on a shiny silver scrapbook paper and layered on the black and white chevron.  And then a few embellishments were added for sparkle.

Emily’s room is designed around chandeliers.   So to keep with the theme,  I added a few little gemstones to this felt chandelier and hot glued it onto the shadow box.

Last year for her birthday we took a trip to see Taylor’s opening show for her “Speak Now” tour.  I think that I left enough space in the box so that Emily can add her own mementos from that trip if she wants to.

It is all wrapped up and ready for her to open….hope she likes it!

Happy Birthday to my sweetheart!!  I love you!

  2. I have 4 daughters. When I was 38, my oldest was 18 and my youngest was 13. I was told many, many times I didn't look old enough to have have a teenage daughter much less 4 of them.
I will be 50 this July. My oldest will be 30, my youngest will be 25, and I now have 5 (and 1/2) grandchildren. I now hear over and over again that I don't look old enough to have teenagers much less grandchildren.
They say kids keep you looking young (and you look very young by the way). I say the wine you consume along the way to stay sane is what keeps you young (it's a method of preservation I think).

  3. Aww, she'll love it, how wonderful. Happy birthday Emily :o) I love it and that it pertains to all ages. Very uplifting. Yes, I felt the same when my daughter was a teenager. Thanks for sharing.
